To enable GitHub AI Scan, first check who owns the repository and whether it is eligible. Then confirm code scanning, the effective AI Scan setting, and the billing budget. An organization-owned repository inherits organization controls; a repository administrator cannot override a disabled organization setting just by toggling a local option.
Start with one project you maintain and an ordinary same-repository pull request containing supported changes. Do not seed an exploitable bug to see whether the scanner notices it. Confirm the feature’s effective configuration and review any findings it produces while retaining your normal human review process.
Is my repository eligible for AI Scan?
GitHub documents support for public repositories, with additional licensing requirements for private or internal organization repositories. Personal private repositories are not eligible under the current documentation. Managed-user personal namespaces have additional restrictions. Check the current ownership and visibility matrix before troubleshooting the interface.
The AI Scan overview explains the scope. A missing control may reflect eligibility or policy rather than a broken repository.
Which settings and policies must be enabled?
| Level | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Enterprise, when applicable | Policy permits organizations to enable AI Scan |
| Organization | AI Scan enabled for eligible repositories |
| Repository | Code scanning enabled and effective AI Scan status allowed |
| Personal public repository | Admin enables the AI Scan control under code scanning |
| Billing | Included credits and metered usage budgets permit scanning |
Review the official instructions for your account type. An enterprise allowance alone does not switch the feature on, and organization enablement can immediately affect eligible repositories.
How should I configure usage before enabling it?
Identify the account responsible for usage and review available Code Security AI Credits and budget limits. Decide who will monitor spending and who can adjust the budget. Do this before a broad organization rollout so qualifying pull requests do not create unexplained usage.
A budget that prevents scanning is also an operational condition to document. Do not interpret missing findings as proof that a change was assessed.
How do I check that a pull request is in scope?
Use a normal PR from the same repository with relevant supported-language changes. Fork and Dependabot pull requests are outside the documented scope. Confirm the effective feature setting and inspect the PR’s Conversation and Files changed views for any AI-labeled findings.
No finding is a possible outcome of an eligible scan. It does not prove either that the engine failed or that the code is secure. The CodeQL comparison explains why the signals differ.
What should happen after a useful finding?
Review the path and proposed fix, apply a scoped correction if warranted, and run the relevant behavior check. Keep required reviews and existing enforceable checks in place because AI Scan findings do not block merges. Deployment still needs the normal supported update and recovery process.
For NAS-hosted PHP apps, use the Docker update guide and runtime patch verification workflow to ensure an approved source change actually reaches the service you operate.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to choose a model to enable AI Scan?
No. GitHub’s documented enablement process does not require selecting an inference model.
Can a repository admin enable it while the organization disables it?
Not for an organization-owned repository under the documented policy model. The effective organization setting must permit it.
Does a Copilot license alone establish repository eligibility?
No. Check ownership, visibility, code-security requirements, and policy. GitHub states a Copilot license is not required for AI Scan itself.
Should a clean PR result replace review?
No. Findings are advisory and incomplete security evidence; keep appropriate human review and existing enforceable checks.
