Additional 1080p/4K streams and higher frame rates raise CPU and memory demand.
ZoneMinder requirements at a glance
ZoneMinder is an NVR workload; cameras, video analysis and retention matter far more than the web UI.
- RAM
- No universal numerical official RAM minimum published.
- CPU
- No universal core minimum. Camera decoding, motion analysis and recording determine CPU demand.
- Current release
- ZoneMinder 1.38.4 is the latest current release in the 1.38 series.
- Database
- Official Ubuntu installation supports MySQL or MariaDB.
- Storage
- No fixed disk minimum; event/continuous recordings usually dominate capacity and can require terabytes.
- Best Zima starting point
- ZimaBoard 2 1664 suits a few modest streams; ZimaCube 2 Pro is the better NVR platform when camera count, analysis and retention increase.
From official requirements to the right setup
Size ZoneMinder from cameras and retention, not from a generic container minimum.
-
Official requirements
Count cameras and record resolution, frame rate, codec and whether each stream is continuously recorded or analyzed for motion.
-
Confirm your needs
Estimate recording bitrate and retention to size storage; event and continuous video capacity normally dominates the system.
-
Leave room to grow
Budget CPU for decoding and motion analysis. Optional hardware acceleration can reduce CPU for supported video paths but is not a core requirement.
-
Run it on ZimaOS
On ZimaOS, use Install Custom App with the official ZoneMinder Docker project, persist database/events/logs and pass through camera or /dev/dri devices only when needed.

Official minimum requirements
ZoneMinder documentation and the current Docker project define platform/database requirements but no universal host hardware minimum.
Do not invent a RAM/core floor. NVR sizing must be derived from camera streams, analysis mode and recording retention. The Docker example's 512 MB shared-memory value is not host RAM.
| Requirement | Official minimum | What this supports |
|---|---|---|
| RAM minimum | No universal numerical minimum published | Camera workload determines memory. |
| CPU minimum | No universal numerical minimum published | Decoding and analysis drive CPU. |
| Current release | 1.38.4 | Latest release as of the current verification date. |
| Database | MySQL or MariaDB | Current official Ubuntu installation path. |
| Docker shared memory example | 512 MB shm | Container shared-memory setting, not whole-host RAM. |
| Hardware acceleration | Optional | Official Docker tooling supports device passthrough such as /dev/dri. |
When to upgrade your hardware
ZoneMinder should scale when video processing or retention becomes the bottleneck.
More cameras or higher resolution increase decode load
Motion analysis consumes CPU
Recording retention fills storage
Continuous analysis can make compute the primary bottleneck even when recording storage is sufficient.
Detection-heavy deployments.Bitrate multiplied by cameras and retention days can quickly reach terabytes.
Long-retention surveillance systems.Plan hardware growth with confidence
Scale ZoneMinder around camera-processing CPU and recording storage.
Use ZimaBoard 2 1664 for a few modest cameras
16 GB gives memory headroom, but the 4-core N150 limits heavy multi-camera analysis.
ZimaBoard 2 1664.Use multi-drive storage for recordings
Surveillance video capacity and retention are ideal use cases for a multi-bay NAS.
ZimaCube 2 Standard.Use stronger CPU for more cameras and analysis
More cores help decode, motion analysis and broader NVR services.
ZimaCube 2 Pro.Use hardware acceleration only where supported
Device passthrough such as /dev/dri can reduce some video-processing CPU load.
Use supported integrated/video hardware and validate codec paths. Can it run on ZimaOS?
No public official ZimaOS one-click ZoneMinder App Store detail page was verified for this guide. ZoneMinder can be deployed through Install Custom App, but NVR device access and storage mappings need careful configuration.
Custom install ZoneMinder in ZimaOS
Use Install Custom App with the official ZoneMinder Docker files, persist events/database/logs, map camera devices if needed and allocate large recording storage outside the system disk.
Custom install ZoneMinder in the ZimaOS app ↗Use ZoneMinder's official Docker project
ZoneMinder maintains dedicated Dockerfiles and examples, including persistent events/database/log mappings and optional device passthrough.
Review ZoneMinder Docker files ↗Use current ZoneMinder 1.38 releases
The current release line includes 1.38.4 with modern streaming and hardware-acceleration improvements.
Review ZoneMinder releases ↗Choose Zima hardware for ZoneMinder
ZoneMinder is both compute- and storage-sensitive, making ZimaCube the better fit once camera count grows.

Zima Blade Little yet Powerful
Maybe I am not digital natives but I live with PCs since 12 years old in 1984 when IBM PC clone come to my home. Many years have passed and many operating system I've tried. For me Zima blade and CasaOS was a quantum leap for home PC enthusiast and server lab machine to make me stay curious and relevant for this era.
Very good!!
I use ZimaCube Pro as 5th Proxmox cluster node. It runs several VMs and containers, including a VM with GPU passthrough to run a self-hosted LLM. A specific LXC container runs a Samba server for NAS capabilities using four of six RAID 6 SATA HDDs with ZFS.
Great innovation for mini server!
It is very useful and makes a powerful mini server for many purposes, including university and college students in engineering and electronics. Thank you so much for making this server.
