File data, versions, trash and backups can quickly dwarf the application footprint.
Large personal or team file libraries.
Seafile requirements at a glance
Seafile's application baseline is modest, but the actual file library normally dominates storage.
- RAM minimum
- Seafile 14.0 CE: 2 GB RAM.
- CPU minimum
- 2 CPU cores; more than 2 GHz is recommended.
- Disk baseline
- 10 GB available minimum, with more than 50 GB recommended before adding the actual user file library.
- Integrated services
- The standard 14.0 Docker deployment includes Seafile, Redis, MariaDB, SeaDoc and Caddy.
- Cache
- Redis is the recommended cache path; starting with Seafile 14.0, the docs no longer recommend Memcached for the standard deployment.
- Best Zima starting point
- ZimaBoard 2 832 easily clears the CE minimum; ZimaCube 2 Standard is better when the synchronized file library becomes large.
From official requirements to the right setup
Use Seafile's published CE minimum for the app stack, then size storage for the actual synchronized libraries.
-
Official requirements
Reserve at least 2 GB RAM, 2 CPU cores above 2 GHz and 10 GB application/system disk; Seafile recommends more than 50 GB.
-
Confirm your needs
Use the standard Docker stack with Redis and MariaDB, and keep /opt/seafile-data plus database volumes on durable storage.
-
Leave room to grow
Calculate user-library capacity separately from the 10–50 GB app baseline. File history, snapshots, trash and backups can multiply the raw library size.
-
Run it on ZimaOS
On ZimaOS, use Install Custom App with Seafile 14.0's official Docker files, persist MariaDB/Seafile data, and put large libraries on SATA/NVMe/HDD storage rather than eMMC.
Check every playback client
- 2 GB+ RAM
- 2+ CPU cores
- 50 GB+ app headroom
- User library size
- Redis
- MariaDB
- Backup/history retention
- Other extensions
Official minimum requirements
Seafile 14.0 publishes explicit CE hardware minimums and recommended disk capacity.
The 10 GB figure is the Seafile system/app baseline, not your total file-library requirement. For a practical NAS deployment, storage planning usually matters more than app compute.
| Requirement | Official minimum | What this supports |
|---|---|---|
| CE RAM minimum | 2 GB | Current 14.0 requirement. |
| CE CPU minimum | 2 cores | More than 2 GHz recommended. |
| CE disk minimum | 10 GB available | Application/system requirement. |
| CE disk recommended | More than 50 GB | Before considering large user libraries. |
| Standard DB/cache | MariaDB + Redis | Integrated in the current Docker stack. |
| Standard services | Seafile, Redis, MariaDB, SeaDoc and Caddy | Current CE Docker integration. |
When to upgrade your hardware
Seafile should scale when file-library capacity, concurrent sync or extensions outgrow the CE baseline.
User libraries and history grow
Concurrent sync and WebDAV activity increase
OnlyOffice, AI or other extensions are added
More clients create additional CPU, database, Redis and disk I/O.
Teams and multi-device households.Seafile explicitly says extra extensions require additional resources above the base requirement.
Feature-rich deployments.Plan hardware growth with confidence
Scale Seafile primarily around storage capacity and database/cache persistence.
Use SSD-backed MariaDB and metadata storage
Fast durable storage helps database and small-file metadata operations.
Use SATA/NVMe with ZimaBoard 2 or SSD tiers on ZimaCube 2.Keep small libraries on ZimaBoard 2 832
8 GB and four cores are comfortably above the CE baseline.
ZimaBoard 2 832.Use ZimaCube for large synchronized libraries
Six drive bays make it much easier to scale primary file capacity and backups.
ZimaCube 2 Standard.Use Pro for heavier services and faster networking
More CPU, 16 GB RAM and 10GbE help when many clients and additional services share the host.
ZimaCube 2 Pro.Can it run on ZimaOS?
No public official ZimaOS one-click Seafile App Store detail page was verified for this guide. Seafile can be deployed through Install Custom App using the official 14.0 Docker files.
Custom install Seafile in ZimaOS
Use Install Custom App with Seafile's official 14.0 Docker configuration, persist Seafile and MariaDB data, and place large file libraries on dedicated storage.
Custom install Seafile in the ZimaOS app ↗Use Seafile's official CE Docker setup
The current 14.0 guide integrates Redis, MariaDB, SeaDoc and Caddy and documents the standard persistent directories.
Review Seafile CE Docker setup ↗Follow Seafile's current hardware baseline
Seafile CE 14.0 calls for 2 GB RAM, 2 cores above 2 GHz and at least 10 GB available disk.
Review Seafile requirements ↗Choose Zima hardware for Seafile
Seafile is light on compute at the CE baseline; file capacity and network/storage performance usually drive the hardware decision.
Is this a small personal/team library or a larger multi-drive sync server?
Use ZimaBoard 2 with attached SATA/NVMe storage.

Zima Blade Little yet Powerful
Maybe I am not digital natives but I live with PCs since 12 years old in 1984 when IBM PC clone come to my home. Many years have passed and many operating system I've tried. For me Zima blade and CasaOS was a quantum leap for home PC enthusiast and server lab machine to make me stay curious and relevant for this era.
Very good!!
I use ZimaCube Pro as 5th Proxmox cluster node. It runs several VMs and containers, including a VM with GPU passthrough to run a self-hosted LLM. A specific LXC container runs a Samba server for NAS capabilities using four of six RAID 6 SATA HDDs with ZFS.
Great innovation for mini server!
It is very useful and makes a powerful mini server for many purposes, including university and college students in engineering and electronics. Thank you so much for making this server.
