PHP Security Checklist for Self-Hosted WordPress and Nextcloud Servers

WordPress and Nextcloud both depend on PHP, but they have different maintenance workflows. A runtime advisory calls for checking the PHP service beneath the app; an application update calls for reviewing the app and its extensions. Completing one does not automatically complete the other.

Identify the PHP runtime actually used by the app, follow its supported security update path, and verify the running replacement. Keep recovery copies and check the app’s plugins, exposure, and access controls; updating only the host runtime may leave a container unchanged.

Shared checks before changing either application

  • Identify the PHP runtime serving web requests and every associated PHP worker.
  • Match package revisions or image digests to the maintainer's security notice.
  • Map public domains, forwarding rules, tunnels, reverse proxies, and IPv6 reachability.
  • Restrict external access while an affected service awaits a verified fix.
  • Record database, configuration, and persistent-file locations.
  • Confirm a consistent backup and a tested restoration method.

If you cannot connect an observed version to a trusted update source, mark the service unresolved instead of treating a dashboard's “up to date” message as proof.

WordPress: inspect the runtime and extension surface

Check PHP through your private hosting or service administration tools, then verify the active web handler. Review WordPress core, installed plugins, and themes separately. Remove unused extensions through a planned change, and obtain maintained replacements for abandoned components.

Before updating, preserve both the database and the relevant WordPress files, including uploads and configuration. Test sign-in, a normal page, media upload, scheduled activity, and any important form or commerce workflow after the change. A homepage can load while a plugin-dependent action fails.

Review who can edit files, install extensions, and administer the site. Keep a recovery copy that the web application cannot overwrite. WordPress's official hardening guide is a useful reference for this broader maintenance work; these controls do not substitute for the PHP fix.

Nextcloud: protect state and check release compatibility

Use the requirements for your installed Nextcloud release when choosing a PHP branch. The latest manual may describe a newer release than your server, so match documentation to the deployment before changing the runtime.

Nextcloud's backup guidance identifies configuration, custom apps where present, data, theme files, and the database as recovery components. Follow its maintenance-mode instructions and run administrative operations as the documented HTTP user. Preserve consistency across files and database state.

After updating, test browser access and a small upload, then test a sync client, sharing behavior, and scheduled jobs used by your setup. Check administrative warnings before treating the work as complete. Upgrade order and migration constraints should follow the release documentation.

Check what the application can reach

Keep WordPress and Nextcloud service permissions limited to their own needs. A web application rarely needs unrestricted write access to every household backup or the host's administration socket. Document storage mounts and remove broad access only after confirming the app's required paths.

When running on ZimaCube 2, use the same discipline for each installed app. Private storage remains easier to protect when active application state and independent recovery copies have clear, separate roles.

Close the checklist with evidence

Save the application release, runtime package or digest, update time, successful checks, and remaining exceptions. If you find suspicious changes, isolate and investigate; installing a patch does not prove earlier access was legitimate.

The result should be an auditable record for each app. “WordPress updated” and “Nextcloud works” are too broad to replace runtime and restore evidence.
