Zima Blade Small SAMBA File Server
A compact and energy-efficient file server built around the Zima Blade, designed for light server and storage workloads. This setup is tailored for home or small office environments where space, cost, and power efficiency are priorities.
Key Features and Setup:
Hardware:
Zima Blade SBC.
2 x SSDs connected via SATA, configured in a software RAID 1 (mirror) using Linux mdadm. This setup provides redundancy—if one SSD fails, the other continues to operate, ensuring data availability.
Software:
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Pro: A long-term support release with extended security maintenance and additional support features available through Ubuntu Pro. This provides a stable and secure OS platform for running server services.
SAMBA: Configured as a lightweight file server to share files over the local network . Ideal for sharing documents, media files, and backups across devices.
Purpose:
Acts as a NAS (Network Attached Storage) for household.
Provides redundant data storage through mirrored SSDs.
Supports file sharing across devices in the network using Samba.
Can also be extended to support DLNA, Time Machine backups, or even Nextcloud.
I’m using a Zimaboard 832 with a custom bay module that supports two 2.5” SSDs (Samsung 870 EVO). This is actually my very first home lab, and I’m absolutely excited about it!
The Zimaboard has been a fantastic way for me to discover the Linux world and gain hands-on experience with Unix and Docker.
I was looking for a compact, energy-efficient, and silent setup. Initially, my main goal was to build a media server with Jellyfin, but I soon found myself enjoying many other projects—setting up my Home Assistant server, running PiHole as a DNS sinkhole, and configuring file sharing.
For me, this is my very first home lab, and I’m truly amazed by everything I’ve been able to learn and create.
A huge thank you to the entire IceWhale team for making such a wonderful product!

Thanks for sharing! Running a Storj node on Web3 sounds like a great use case, and ZimaCube could definitely be a solid choice for that.
Is there any specific information or support you’d like from us to help with your setup? From a technical perspective, it should work smoothly, but we’re happy to assist with any details you need.
Looking forward to hearing more about your plans!
Now uses Asustor for running Storj node web3 service thinking about ZimaCube for same purpose.
