How to Restore Plex After a Failed Container Update

Stop the failed Plex container and its automatic updater before you pull another image. Preserve the current logs and the real Plex configuration path first; recovery is much safer when the broken container cannot keep replacing itself or writing to application state.

On a home NAS, a container update can fail at several different layers: the new image may not start, the recreated service may lose a volume or network setting, or the new Plex build may open existing application data differently. The important boundary is the persistent Plex configuration, especially the database and metadata under `/config`. This workflow separates the image, container definition, mounts, and database before changing any of them, then restores the smallest failed layer and verifies the original server identity, library, and playback. If logs indicate database corruption or an irreversible migration, stop before forcing an older image onto the only copy of that state.

Stop the Update Loop and Capture the Failed State

Disable the automatic updater for Plex and stop any rapid restart loop. Keep other healthy services running unless Plex shares a database that requires a coordinated stop. The goal is to hold the failure still long enough to inspect it, not to restart the entire app stack and erase the timeline.

Record the failed container's exact image tag, image ID, and digest when available. Save the effective mounts, environment variables, published ports, network mode, network aliases, device mappings, group additions, restart policy, and health state. A tag such as `latest` is not a reliable rollback record by itself because it can point to different image content over time.

Export the recent logs before another start attempt and note the first fatal message, not only the final exit code. A missing file, permission denial, database error, unsupported instruction, or address conflict sends recovery down a different path. Also record when the update ran and whether the container was recreated, because a pull alone does not change an existing container while recreation can change its effective definition.

You are ready to continue when the failure is reproducible and you can answer four questions: which image ran, which persistent paths it used, which runtime settings it received, and which error appeared first. If those facts are still unknown, another pull or restart adds noise without making recovery safer.

Protect Plex Configuration Before Recreating the Container

Treat the container as replaceable and the Plex configuration as persistent. The critical state normally lives at the host path or named volume mounted to `/config`; media libraries should remain separate mounts. Recreating the service is only low risk when it reconnects to the same persistent state instead of an empty directory.

Inspect the mount from the host and from a temporary read-only context if your platform supports one. Confirm that the expected database, preferences, metadata, plug-in data, and logs exist. Record the mount source, filesystem, ownership, permissions, available space, and whether it has become read-only. An empty directory at the expected path is a warning to stop, not permission to let Plex create a new server there.

Make a backup of the entire intended configuration path before testing a rollback, then verify that the backup can be listed or restored to an isolated location. If the filesystem supports snapshots, a snapshot can shorten recovery, but it should not be the only copy when the same storage device may be failing. Keep the failed state as well as the last known-good backup until the server is verified.

Do not delete preference files, database files, or metadata to make the older image start. If the configuration cannot be read consistently, its ownership is unclear, or a copy cannot be verified, move directly to storage or database recovery. Container recreation cannot repair an untrustworthy state source.

Decide Whether the Image, Definition, Mount, or Database Failed

Compare the captured container with the last working deployment before choosing a repair. Start with the first fatal log line and the effective definition, then place the failure in one of four branches: the new image cannot run, the container definition changed, a persistent path is unavailable, or Plex cannot use its existing application state.

An image or runtime failure usually appears before Plex can open `/config`: architecture errors, unsupported CPU instructions, missing runtime libraries, or an immediate process exit with an unchanged container definition. A version-scoped playback failure disappeared after the server returned to an earlier Plex image, which makes rollback a useful discriminator when the same definition worked before and no mount or permission changed.

A definition or mount failure appears after recreation when Plex starts with missing media, an empty server, denied file access, no web endpoint, or lost hardware access. Compare the saved and effective volume sources, UID/GID, groups, ports, network mode, devices, and environment. Correct the first proven mismatch instead of changing every field at once.

Database and migration messages require a separate boundary. If the new build began a schema change, an older image may not be able to read the resulting state. Back up the current configuration again, preserve the logs, and do not force repeated starts across several versions. That branch needs a compatible image, a verified pre-update backup, or database-aware repair.

Roll Back to the Last Known-Good Plex Image

Choose the exact image that last ran successfully. Prefer a retained image digest, immutable version reference, or local image ID over a moving tag. Keep automatic updates disabled so the updater cannot replace the rollback as soon as it starts.

Recreate only the Plex service from the saved definition. Keep the same project or container identity where it affects networks, the same `/config` and media sources, the same ports, network mode, environment, UID/GID, groups, and devices. Do not remove volumes and do not run a system-wide cleanup before the old image has been tested.

Follow the first startup in real time. A successful image rollback should open the original configuration, retain the same server identity, expose the existing libraries, and stop the previous fatal error. Leave optional hardware transcoding and background scans aside until basic login and media access work.

Stop if the old image reports that the database is newer, incompatible, or mid-migration. Repeatedly switching versions can make the recovery point harder to understand. Restore a verified pre-update configuration copy to an isolated path or move forward to a compatible Plex image instead of forcing an unsafe downgrade.

Restore the Original Container Definition When Rollback Is Not Enough

If the known-good image still fails, return to the definition comparison. Restore one missing setting at a time and restart only Plex after each change. This keeps the evidence readable: when the server returns, you know which runtime dependency was responsible.

Start with `/config` and media mounts. Confirm the container sees the intended paths and can read them as the configured user. If the update recreated Plex under a different UID or GID, supplemental group, or security context, restore the last working identity or correct the storage ownership deliberately. Do not make the entire appdata tree world-writable as a shortcut.

Then check the web path and optional devices. Restore the previous host network or published port, network aliases, and reverse-proxy membership before changing firewall rules. Confirm the web interface on the direct server path first. Add the GPU device and render-group access only after Plex can start, load its library, and serve a basic software-compatible stream.

A passing definition repair has a clear state: the container sees the intended configuration and media, the Plex endpoint is reachable, and the logs no longer show the selected dependency error. If the same database error remains after those checks, stop recreating the container and return to the protected application-state branch.

Verify the Plex Database, Library, and Playback Before Re-Enabling Updates

A running process is only the first recovery check. Sign in through the direct Plex endpoint and confirm that it is the original claimed server, not a new server created against an empty configuration directory. Inspect startup logs for database corruption, repeated migration attempts, and unexpected library initialization.

Open several existing library items and confirm that posters, metadata, watch state, and file paths are present. Test access to one small known-good media file from the same storage used before the update. If metadata exists but media is unavailable, the database may be healthy while a media mount or permission still needs repair.

Play the known file on one local client, then on the client that exposed the failure if applicable. Record the playback mode and confirm that seeking works. Treat missing GPU acceleration, remote access, or subtitle behavior as separate follow-up branches if basic playback succeeds; they should not block preservation of a recovered server.

Finally, perform one controlled Plex service restart with the updater still disabled. Recovery passes only when the same server identity, database, libraries, metadata, media access, and basic playback return after that restart. Keep the captured failed logs and backup until this full result is repeatable.

Know When to Stop and Make the Next Plex Update Recoverable

Stop local container repair when logs repeatedly report database corruption, the configuration filesystem returns I/O errors, the only state copy has been partially migrated, or no compatible image can open it. Preserve the image identifiers, effective definition, logs, and configuration backup. Database-aware restoration or storage repair is safer at that point than more container churn.

Once Plex is stable, document the recovered image digest, container definition, persistent paths, runtime identity, network mode, devices, and the verification results. The broader single-service recovery process is useful when Plex also depends on shared databases, proxy networks, or other stack services, but those healthy dependencies should not be restored merely because Plex failed.

For the next update, create and verify a fresh `/config` backup, retain the current image, disable automatic pruning, update Plex manually, and repeat the identity, library, playback, and restart checks before re-enabling automation. An update is complete only when it preserves a tested rollback target as well as a working new version.
