Can Plex Move Between ARM and x86 Without Losing Its Data?

Treat an ARM-to-x86 or x86-to-ARM Plex move as a state migration plus a feature-compatibility test, not as a blind copy.

The database and metadata may be portable while binaries, media-analysis features, hardware acceleration, and path assumptions differ between platforms. Preserve the original server until the new one passes library, watch-state, metadata, playback, and feature checks. Do not delete the source merely because the new service starts.

Move the Whole State Set, Not One Convenient File

Plex state includes more than a single library database. Copying only one file can preserve some history while forcing other metadata or indexes to rebuild.

A safe move preserves the complete Plex server data directory, including metadata, settings, and view state, rather than copying only the library database.

Copy the complete Plex state directory with the server stopped, preserving ownership and file structure. Keep the source untouched until the new host survives a full validation pass.

Keep Media Paths Stable or Remap Them Deliberately

Database portability does not make path strings portable. A different mount point or operating-system path convention can make valid records point to unavailable media.

Build a path map before startup and compare old and new media roots. If the architecture change also changes the OS, treat path translation as an independent migration step.

Test one item from every library before a broad scan. Stable mounts in a persistent container-data layout reduce the number of moving parts during an architecture swap.

Validate Architecture-Specific Features Separately

Hardware transcoding, some analysis functions, and driver-backed features may differ even when core library state works. Do not infer feature parity from a successful login.

Shared Plex state does not guarantee identical features across architectures; ARM/x86 analysis differences can remain even after the database and media paths migrate successfully.

Create a checklist for Direct Play, transcode, HDR/subtitle path, analysis features, and remote access. A feature that fails only on the new architecture should be treated as compatibility work, not data loss.

Preserve a Rollback Boundary Until Normal Use Is Proven

Migration is safe when the old server can still be restored if the new host reveals a delayed problem. A few minutes of successful browsing is not enough to retire the source.

Run the new host through a normal day, a library change, a restart, and a backup/restore check. If the new architecture changes stored state in a way the old host cannot safely reuse, restore from the pre-migration copy rather than switching the live directory back and forth.

Only decommission the old host after the new server passes those tests and a fresh backup is verified.
