Buy Plex hardware only after you can explain how it will stay cool, protect state, survive storage or power problems, and be restored after failure.
Check Cooling at the Real Sustained Workload
A small server can be quiet at idle and still throttle or become noisy during long transcodes, scans, or backup activity. Reliability planning should use sustained thermals, not a short benchmark.
In sustained N100 thermal testing, one mini PC reached 71°C in Cinebench R23 without thermal throttling while fan noise increased under load. Sustained temperature and acoustics are more useful than idle behavior when judging enclosure cooling.
Look for sustained-load temperature and noise data, then place the system where airflow will not be blocked. If the candidate requires an unrealistic ambient temperature or constant high fan speed to hold performance, choose a better thermal design.
Treat Storage and State as Separate Reliability Problems
Media capacity and Plex database durability are related but not identical. Bulk media can be rebuilt from backup differently from the small app-data set that defines the server experience.

Define the media redundancy, Plex app-data backup, and off-device backup separately before choosing bays or drives. If a single device failure would remove both live state and the only backup, the storage plan is not reliable enough.

An always-on server should have a safe response to brief outages and a predictable restart sequence. A UPS is useful only when runtime, shutdown signaling, and post-power validation are part of the plan.

Estimate server plus storage load, select enough runtime for your shutdown policy, and verify the host can restart cleanly. When the UPS cannot communicate shutdown or the storage stack needs manual recovery after every outage, address that before deployment.
Require a Restore Path Before Paying for Premium Hardware
Higher-end hardware does not substitute for a tested recovery process. The best reliability purchase is one whose state can be backed up, migrated, and rebuilt without proprietary surprises.
Plex state migration must preserve database, metadata, configuration, and path continuity as well as media access.
Write a one-page restore procedure and confirm the candidate uses storage, OS, and interfaces you can reproduce or replace. If a motherboard, enclosure, or proprietary storage layer would trap the only usable copy of Plex state, value recoverability over a marginal performance feature. After those reliability gates pass, size only the Plex compute headroom your workload actually needs.
