USB Flash Drives Are a Weak Fit for a 24/7 System Disk
ZimaOS system storage also carries writable overlay/data, Docker/AppData unless moved, logs, updates, databases, and other small writes. Consumer USB thumb drives often have much lower endurance and less predictable recovery behavior than SATA/NVMe SSDs.
If the goal is freeing internal SATA bays, a small USB-attached SSD or another dedicated SSD is generally a better system-storage class than a low-cost flash stick.
Keeping Data Drives Separate from the OS Is Still a Good Goal
The user's architectural goal remains sensible: avoid mixing the NAS system installation with the disks you want to use for RAID or primary data. Back Up the System-Recovery Metadata and App Data
