Kasm Workspaces is more than a single web app container. It runs its own services plus containerized desktop sessions, so the host needs enough CPU, RAM, SSD space and a Docker layout that Kasm can manage predictably.
Check Current Kasm Requirements Before Following an Old CasaOS Recipe
Current Kasm documentation lists a minimum of 2 CPU cores, 4 GB RAM and 75 GB SSD storage, with additional resources required for each active workspace session. Why a VM Is Often Cleaner Than Installing Kasm Into a NAS App Stack
If Kasm expects to manage Docker versions, swap, storage and its own service lifecycle, placing it inside a NAS appliance's existing Docker environment increases the number of moving parts. A supported Ubuntu or Debian VM gives Kasm the host model its documentation expects while keeping the NAS control plane separate.

Storage Matters More Than the Installer Looks
Kasm downloads workspace images and writes active session data. Put its VM disk or Docker storage on SSD/NVMe with enough free capacity. A Kasm install can technically start on a small volume and still become unreliable once multiple workspace images are pulled.
When the Old CasaOS Tutorial Is Still Useful
Use it to understand the idea—browser-based isolated desktops on a home server. For a fresh 2026 deployment, use current Kasm requirements and current platform tooling rather than assuming the 2024 BigBear package definition is still the recommended installation path.
