Why Unraid Workload Matters

Disk activity changes the thermal picture. Parity checks, parity builds, array rebuilds, and sustained multi-drive transfers keep several disks active continuously and can generate significantly more heat than an idle array.

When evaluating a 48°C reading, record whether it appears at idle, during normal file transfers, or only during a long parity operation. A ZimaCube that reaches 48°C only during a sustained parity task presents a different cooling problem from one that sits near 48°C while mostly idle.

What to Check Before Adding More Drives

If five drives already reach temperatures you are uncomfortable with, stabilize the current configuration before increasing drive density. Use a repeatable test order:

  1. Record SMART temperatures for every installed HDD.
  2. Compare idle and sustained-load temperatures.
