The routes should be judged against the same devices and remote-use pattern. A VPN that works only on technical devices is not equivalent to direct access for TVs or family members who cannot operate the tunnel.

Choose direct exposure when client simplicity is the higher-priority requirement and you can maintain the edge configuration. Keep only the ports and routes you actually need. Test the same remote Plex streaming path through each access model so the security comparison does not accidentally compare different client or routing behavior.

The Safer Route Is the One You Can Operate Correctly

A theoretically safer design can become riskier when users bypass it or the admin cannot diagnose failures. The winner depends on trust model, client support, and operational discipline.

Stable route metrics make troubleshooting easier when several interfaces or tunnels are present.

Document how a user connects, how access is revoked, and how the path is tested from outside the home. Prefer the route whose security boundary you can verify repeatedly, not the one with the more impressive diagram.
