ZVM Started in ZimaOS 1.2 Beta: What the 2024 VM Launch Added and What Current Virtual Machine Manager Users Should Know

An April 2024 ZimaOS 1.2.0-beta1 announcement introducing ZVM with Windows, Ubuntu, Debian, BSD, OpenWRT, UNRAID and TrueNAS guest support plus network bridging. The thread also documents broken beta download links and old /DATA/rauc update behavior. Current ZimaOS has a much newer Virtual Machine Manager stack and different installation/update paths.

ZimaOS 1.2 beta was the point where ZVM became a visible product feature. The April 2024 announcement said ZVM could run multiple guest operating systems—including Windows, Ubuntu, Debian, OpenWRT, BSD, UNRAID, and TrueNAS—and added bridged networking, CPU/memory management, command-line tools, and remote management.

The package URLs and update instructions in that announcement are now historical. Current ZimaOS is 1.7.1, current installation uses the modern x86 installer/RAUC pipeline, and Virtual Machine Manager has continued to evolve. Keep the 1.2 article as product history, not as a current download page.

What ZVM 1.2 Beta Added

The release notes described:

  • new ZVM app;
  • multiple Linux/Windows/BSD-style guests;
  • network bridge support;
  • CPU and memory management;
  • remote management;
  • shortcuts and other VM controls.

It also added batch checking for app updates and several RAID/Network ID fixes outside virtualization.

Multiple VMs Were Already Supported by 1.2.2

A July 2024 follow-up asked whether multiple VMs could run. 777-Spider replied that users could install ZimaOS 1.2.2 and manage multiple Windows/Linux systems.

How many VMs a current host can run still depends on physical CPU cores, RAM, storage latency, and concurrent workload rather than a fixed ZVM count.

A v1.1 user reported that the posted 1.2 beta links returned 404. A community maintainer acknowledged the link problem and updated it.

That alone is reason enough not to preserve the old 2024 download URLs as a current installation method.

/DATA/rauc Was an Old Update Location

The thread discussed waiting for a red update dot only after a beta package had downloaded under /DATA/rauc/. Current ZimaOS uses the newer offline OTA location and stable release assets.

Use the current ZimaOS offline update path.

Windows Guests May Need VirtIO Drivers

Modern KVM/QEMU Windows VMs commonly expose VirtIO storage, network, balloon, or display-related devices. Later IceWhale community guidance instructs users to mount the virtio-win.iso driver disc in ZVM and install the required Windows drivers when Device Manager shows unknown devices.

Plan Current VMs Around Host Headroom

Do not allocate every CPU thread and all RAM to guests. ZimaOS, QEMU/libvirt, filesystem cache, Docker apps, and storage services still need resources. SSD/NVMe is preferable for interactive Windows guests.

Snapshot/Restore Was Not Confirmed by This Source

A later user asked whether ZVM could create and restore VM snapshots. Zima-Giorgio asked them to open a separate topic rather than answering in this thread. Therefore the 1.2 announcement should not be used as evidence that snapshot/restore was already implemented at that time.

Bridge Networking Was a Launch Feature, but Guest Networking Still Needs Validation

The launch poster advertised bridge networking so VMs could participate more directly on the LAN. Later community threads show that Windows bridged networking can still depend on guest proxy settings, DHCP, host NIC behavior, and current ZVM implementation details.

Do not treat “bridge supported” as proof that every guest automatically receives working LAN connectivity without configuration.

PCIe/USB/GPU Passthrough Is a Separate Advanced Capability

The 1.2 beta announcement focused on ordinary virtual machines and network bridging. It did not promise mature PCIe/GPU passthrough for every device. Current passthrough planning still depends on IOMMU groups, firmware virtualization settings, guest drivers, and the exact ZVM/current extension path.

VM Storage Should Be Planned Separately from Bulk NAS Storage

Interactive Windows/Linux guests benefit from SSD/NVMe latency. Bulk HDD pools are better suited to colder VM images or backups. Keep enough host headroom for ZimaOS services and avoid filling the small system disk with expanding VM images.
