By July 2025, the answer had changed: Zima-Giorgio pointed users to a specific Intel AX210 setup procedure. Current ZimaOS documentation now explicitly describes connecting an AX210 through nmtui.
The Original Request Was About NAS Placement
The user wanted to move the NAS anywhere in the house instead of keeping it next to an Ethernet connection. That is a valid convenience goal, but Wi-Fi introduces different stability, roaming, interference, and throughput behavior from a wired NAS link.

When the original poster asked for news, Zima-Giorgio linked the AX210 Wi-Fi module procedure. A later user reported the link was temporarily broken, and Zima-Jerry said it had been fixed.
Current AX210 Setup Uses nmtui
Current IceWhale instructions for ZimaOS v1.4.2 and above tell users to confirm the Intel AX210 is detected and then run sudo nmtui to activate a Wi-Fi network and enter its password.
Follow the current Intel AX210 connection workflow in ZimaOS rather than older forum workarounds.
Wi-Fi Support Is Still Adapter-Specific
The current compatible-network-adapter list names Intel AX210. That does not mean every Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 card automatically has the required kernel module and firmware in ZimaOS.
Newer adapters can be detected at the PCI level while still failing to associate because firmware or management tooling is incomplete.
Current Documentation Also Shows Wireless Configuration in the Dashboard
The current AX210 page includes an optional dashboard view for wireless network settings. That is a major change from the original 2024 thread, which had no normal graphical path.
Client Wi-Fi and Access-Point Mode Are Different Requirements
A later thread participant wanted to create a Wi-Fi hotspot for TVs behind Pi-hole. Connecting ZimaOS as a Wi-Fi client does not automatically make the same adapter a supported access point.
AP mode needs chipset, driver, regulatory, hostapd, routing, and DNS/DHCP support. Do not assume the client-mode AX210 procedure guarantees a production hotspot.
Why Ethernet Remains the Simpler NAS Default
For sustained backups, SMB transfers, media ingestion, and RAID maintenance, wired Ethernet usually offers more predictable latency and throughput. Wi-Fi is useful when placement flexibility matters more than maximum consistency.
Wireless Support Should Be Verified Separately from Ethernet
Current ZimaOS networking documentation still emphasizes physical Ethernet for the default server path, while the AX210-specific instructions cover wireless configuration. If a Wi-Fi interface exists but does not connect, do not disturb a working Ethernet configuration until the wireless path is proven.
For a NAS, Mobility Has a Reliability Tradeoff
The original motivation was to place the NAS anywhere in the house. If the server hosts backups or large media libraries, test sustained transfer speed and reconnection behavior over Wi-Fi before relying on it as the only network path. A card that associates successfully can still perform very differently depending on signal quality, channel width, interference, and access-point placement.
