Original ZimaCube Cooling Mod: Noctua CPU, HDD and NVMe Fans

An original ZimaCube i5 owner replaced the CPU cooler, rear HDD fans, and NVMe-bay airflow. They reported lower CPU, drive, and SSD temperatures, and other owners later reproduced parts of the modification.

This is a first-generation ZimaCube community modification, not a ZimaCube 2 cooling guide. The original poster reported high CPU, HDD, and NVMe temperatures under load and replaced several cooling components without cutting the original chassis.

The Reported Temperature Improvements Were Substantial

The poster reported the CPU dropping from temperatures that could reach around 100°C under load to roughly 70–78°C under full load after changing the cooler. HDDs were reported at roughly 45°C under load after replacing the rear fans, and the NVMe area was reported around 42°C under load after adding dedicated airflow.

Those are community measurements from one system, not laboratory specifications or guaranteed results for every ZimaCube.

The CPU Limit Explains Why 100°C Is a Warning Sign

Intel's Intel i5-1235U thermals lists a 100°C Tjunction and maximum operating temperature for the Core i5-1235U. Reaching that region under sustained load is very different from an idle temperature in the 30s.

The Noctua Noctua NH-L9x65 specs confirms the NH-L9x65 is a 65 mm low-profile cooler and warns users to check CPU compatibility for high heat loads. The community installation also relied on a custom mounting approach.

Current ZimaCube Cooling Options Have Changed

The ZimaCube teardown documents the original ZimaCube fan layout and an unused SYS_FAN header, while the ZimaCube heatsink module is the current replacement heatsink module for the ZimaCube series.

The newer ZimaCube 2 cooling design describes a different ZimaCube 2 thermal layout. Do not copy this 2024 first-generation modification onto ZimaCube 2 simply because the names are similar.

Modification Risk Matters

Disconnect power before opening the chassis, protect the motherboard from dropped screws or conductive debris, and do not overload a fan header with an unknown total current draw. Thermal paste, cooler pressure, fan voltage, and airflow direction all affect the result.

Bottom Line

The mod is useful evidence that airflow and cooler changes materially improved one original ZimaCube, and several replies reported similar improvements. It is not an official universal thermal specification. Use current replacement parts and current product guidance first, especially on ZimaCube 2.
