SATA Y-Cable for ZimaBoard / ZimaBlade

Ready to Dock!

The ZimaBoard was designed with compactness and efficiency in mind. The team worked through over ten layout designs to ensure a sleek, space-saving board that also provides plenty of expansion options. One challenge was finding a way to power SATA peripherals while maintaining a small form factor. The solution? A 4-pin power interface.

In February, Michael Waiblinger, a ZimaBoard backer, introduced the idea of a Y-Cable. His vision was simple: a compact cable that could connect two HDDs or SSDs to the ZimaBoard. The team quickly embraced this idea, collaborating with a manufacturer to create a custom, pure black SATA Y-Cable. After optimizing the motherboard's circuit, the board could handle the power needs of at least two 2.5-inch HDDs, perfect for building a NAS or RAID system.

Thanks to extensive community testing, the cable now supports two 3.5-inch HDDs with the ZimaBoard's 12V/3A power supply, making it an ideal tool for expanding storage on your ZimaBoard.

Key Features

  • Dual Drive Support: Connect two 2.5-inch or two 3.5-inch HDDs/SSDs for expanded storage.
  • Compact Design: The Y-Cabl's 10cm length ensures minimal space usage.
  • Power Efficient: Designed to support the power consumption of two drives with ZimaBoard's 12V/3A power supply.
  • Ideal for NAS/RAID Systems: Perfect for building a personal NAS or RAID setup using FreeNAS or UNRAID.

Use Cases

Personal NAS Setup: Build your own cloud storage system, expanding with up to two drives for secure, easily accessible data. Ideal for for ZimaBoard/ZimaBlade.

Media Server: Store and stream your media with additional storage capacity using 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch drives.

RAID System: Enhance your data redundancy and security by adding two drives in a RAID configuration.

Upgrade your ZimaBoard and ZimaBlade today with the SATA Y-Cable, and effortlessly expand your storage with dual-drive support.

ZimaBlade with Debian 13 works great

The ZimaBlade replaces a Raspberry Pi 4. I then wanted to switch to an x86-based device that has the same or maybe slightly more performance than the Pi. It should also not consume much more power than the Pi and cost less than €200. That’s how I found the ZimaBlade. I do not use the preinstalled ZimaOS. Of course, I took a brief look at ZimaOS. it's quite nice, but for my purposes it has "too many" features that I will not use anyway. I also do not use the built-in eMMC storage. With the supplied SATA/power cable, I connected a 500GB SATA SSD, installed Debian 13 on it, and boot from the SSD. I mainly use the ZimaBlade for small Docker containers and applications that should always run but do not have high hardware requirements (e.g., WireGuard, Uptime Kuma, WOL, a NUT server, etc.).

What bothers me a bit is that the ZimaBlade only has a single USB 3.0 port. Of course, you can use a USB hub. However, a second USB 3.0 or even a USB-C port would have been nice.
The second thing that bothers me is that the eMMC storage is "only" 32GB. A 64GB or even a 128GB option would have been great as well.
What doesn't really offer me any added value or benefit is the PCIe port. It is positioned oddly, and connected PCIe cards simply "hang" on the side without being secured or having any protection. Unfortunately, there is also no separate, suitable case available for using PCIe cards.

Other than that, I am satisfied with the ZimaBlade 7700.
