Playback Alone Usually Favors 2.5GbE
A 2.5GbE link provides far more raw capacity than a single typical movie stream, so the comparison should use aggregate measured bitrate rather than the existence of 4K files.
A measured 2.5GbE NAS test sustained roughly 258–266 MB/s of sequential reads near the link limit. Use your aggregate Plex traffic—not the label “4K”—to decide whether playback is remotely close to that ceiling.
Measure simultaneous playback traffic at the switch or server. If the busy hour remains far below 2.5GbE after overhead, 10GbE will not improve the media path by itself.
10GbE Wins for Fast NAS and Copy Workflows
Large library moves, backups, SSD-backed NAS access, and several servers can use much more bandwidth than playback. In those workflows the network may become the limiting resource before Plex does.
Fast arrays can make 10GbE useful for work that is not ordinary playback. In a 10GbE NAS test, large-block SMB reads exceeded 2 GB/s, showing the kind of storage workflow that can actually outrun a 2.5GbE path.
If storage itself cannot read or write faster than 2.5GbE, upgrading the network first simply moves the unused ceiling upward.
10GbE Costs More Than the NIC
Switch ports, cabling or optics, power, and compatible endpoints are part of the upgrade. A single 10GbE server attached to 1GbE clients gains little for ordinary playback.
Map the complete path from Plex host to NAS and key clients. A home media-server topology makes it clear which hop would remain slower after the NIC upgrade.
Choose 10GbE only when the whole high-bandwidth path exists or is part of a near-term storage plan; otherwise 2.5GbE is the cleaner value tier.
The Winner Depends on the Non-Playback Workload
2.5GbE wins for a playback-focused home server with moderate transfers. 10GbE wins when the Plex host also behaves like a fast storage workstation, backup node, or multi-service hub.
The faster link matters only when the rest of the storage path can feed it. In direct NAS testing, 10GbE produced a clear file-transfer advantage over 2.5GbE, while other tests in the same review were limited by the storage array rather than the interface.
Pick the link that removes a measured ceiling in the full workflow. Do not buy 10GbE solely because the Plex server contains NVMe storage.
